Maps and Travel came in strong as a trend at this fair with some booth devoted exclusively to the theme. Item include wall art, pillows, totes, tea towels, functional wall, paper and stationery, calendars, and home accessories. This trend was represented by every major brand at the show. Included were world, state, and city specific maps. The art include watercolor, hand drawn, photography, as well as more specific road maps with an artful flair using color, icons including flowers, and landmarks.

Every brand had an individual perspective on the trend incorporating their signature look. Rifle Paper, for example, is widely known for their florals and incorporated them into state map wall art. When states were represented, California, Florida, and Texas were the top 3 and of the offerings, not all states were available. Photography was making a comeback in the form of journals and wall art with inspirational sentiments.

Black and white has a strong presence in this theme, which I believe is geared toward the male buyer or gift recipient. Of all the themes on display, the Maps & Travel trend

is likely to attract the masculine buyer more than any other trend presented.

Outside of the US, maps concentrated more on cities like Paris, Rome, Milan, and London

more-so than the actual country

Globes are once again a rising item more in an artful, decorative way than educational. Examples include a cork globe with coloring option and push pins from Gift Republic, and

more colorful floral versions from Two’s Company. Additionally, every state in the US has a state flower, flag, and identifying feature whether a landmark or agricultural aspect.

Art can be created based on the identifying features of the state through a little research rather than being familiar with the actual location.
